UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Roosevelt could not avoid the big inning as the Lakers were swept at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader in Michigan.
The Lakers (7-17, 1-3 GLIAC) dropped the first game of the day 8-0 in six innings after the Cardinals scored four times in the sixth for the walk-off win. Saginaw Valley State put up two big innings in the second game as Roosevelt fell 16-2 in five innings.
SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 8, ROOSEVELT 0
Rebecca Urbaniak hit a double in the first inning, but runners were few and far between for the Lakers in the opener. Kennedi Robien was hit by a pitch in the fifth and Sophia Barofsky reached on an error in the sixth inning. Kendall Pearson added a sixth-inning season as well for Roosevelt's only other hit.
Kailey Hancock was able to keep the Lakers in the game with her pitching, limiting the Cardinals' offense. She allowed just two runs in the second inning then held strong to keep the deficit at 3-0 after four. However, Saginaw Valley State was able to hang five hits in the sixth inning for the walk-off victory.
SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 16, ROOSEVELT 2
The Lakers bounced back in the early innings of the second game, loading the bases in the first and second innings. The second began with Caitlin Williams, Barofsky and Cassidy Sullivan all drawing walks. Urbaniak followed with a one-out walk to force home Williams then Pearson slapped a single that scored a second run.
Unfortunately for Roosevelt, Saginaw Valley State responded with nine runs in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals added six more runs in the fourth inning and Roosevelt managed just three more hits in the contest. Libby Kreykes smacked a single in the third inning, Ella Dvoracek laid down a bunt single in the fourth and Robien added a two-out single in the fifth.
UP NEXT: The Lakers continue their trip through Michigan with a doubleheader Sunday against Wayne State with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
