Enriquez's Hot Bat Not Enough For Roosevelt

DETROIT, Mich. – Roosevelt had a pair of seventh-inning rallies extinguished Sunday as it dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wayne State in Detroit.

A lone unearned run was the only scoring in the first game as the Warriors held off the Lakers (7-19, 1-5 GLIAC) despite Roosevelt putting two runners on base in the final frame. In the second game, Wayne State got off to a hot start, but Roosevelt charged back in the seventh before falling 5-4.

WAYNE STATE 1, ROOSEVELT 0

Kailey Hancock was on cruise control in the circle, scattering four hits across her four innings of work. However, an errant throw allowed the leadoff runner to reach in the fourth inning and a sacrifice bunt moved her over to third. A sacrifice fly was all it took for the Warriors to scratch across the run in the inning.

Isis Enriquez had two of Roosevelt's three hits in the game, singling in the second and seventh frames to jolt the offense. The sophomore led off the seventh with her hit to left field and Madisyn Schrad followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. Sophia Barofsky executed the sacrifice bunt to move the tying run 60 feet away, but the final hit never came to drive home pinch runner Marissa Quintero.

WAYNE STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 4

Roosevelt put itself in a hole almost immediately with three errors in the first inning, allowing Wayne State to take an early 4-0 lead. The Lakers responded with their first runs of the day in the third inning with four hits to drive in two runs and halve the deficit. It began with Barofsky hitting the pitch back up the middle for a single, then Ella Dvoracek laid down a bunt single to the third-base side. Enriquez came through with yet another hit to score Barofsky then Kennedy Calderon smacked a single up the middle to bring in Dvoracek.

Riley Czarnecki settled in after the first inning, allowing just a single hit over the final five innings against the Warriors. Only one of the five runs she allowed was earned as she threw 95 pitches to stabilize the game for the Lakers. The one hit, however, was a sixth-inning triple with two outs and the runner scored on a wild pitch moments later.

Yet the Lakers were ready to fight in the seventh despite the first two batters recording outs in the frame. Barofsky smashed a triple down the left-field line then scooted home on another Dvoracek bunt single. Kendall Pearson sent a single back up the middle then Enriquez again drove in a run with a single down the left-field line. After the two runners both stole a base to put the tying run at third, a sharp groundout ended the rally.

Enriquez finished the day 4 for 7 with a pair of RBI to lead the way.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt is scheduled to make up its two games against Grand Valley State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Rosemont.
