Roosevelt Falls To Ferris State At Home

ROSEMONT – Roosevelt's defense struggled in a pair of run-rule losses to Ferris State on Friday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont.

The Lakers committed four errors in the first game of the doubleheader, resulting in an eight-run fifth inning propelling the Bulldogs to a 13-0 win. Six more errors in the back half of the twinbill allowed Ferris State to again add runs late in a 10-2 win.

FERRIS STATE 13, ROOSEVELT 0

It was a tough start to the afternoon for the Lakers (7-21, 1-7 GLIAC) after the Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning. Ferris State added one more in the second and Kennedy Calderon led off the bottom of the frame with a walk, but nothing materialized for Roosevelt. A leadoff triple allowed Ferris State to tack on another run in the third, and the Lakers moved Sophia Barofsky to third after her walk.

Roosevelt committed one of its errors in the fourth inning, but Kailey Hancock induced a 4-6-3 double play to escape the jam. She was not as fortunate in the fifth as a trio of errors and three hits allowed the Bulldogs to 13 batters to the plate and score eight runs. Cassidy Sullivan drew a two-out walk, but Roosevelt ended the game hitless.

FERRIS STATE 10, ROOSEVELT 2

The Lakers thankfully did not have to wait long for their first hit of the day when Kendall Pearson smacked a single up the middle as Roosevelt's second batter of the game. However, the Lakers could not score after putting their first two batters on the base paths. Ferris State scored a run in the first three innings before exploding for four runs in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marissa Quintero picked up her first collegiate hit in just her third at-bat of the season for Roosevelt. She moved to second on Lundin Cornelius' first career hit then advanced to third on an error. A second error in the frame allowed Barofsky to reach and Quintero to score, and the Lakers eventually loaded the bases before the rally fizzled.

After Ferris State extended its lead to 10-1 in the fifth, Roosevelt was poised to extend the game after Rebecca Urbaniak hit a one-out double. Calderon followed with an RBI single into right field, but an unlucky double play on a lineout ended the threat and the game.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will try to snap its losing skid Saturday back at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex with a doubleheader against Davenport starting at 1 p.m.
