Berni Drives In Winning Run, Softball Splits Versus Calumet St. Joseph

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Emily Berni's fifth-inning infield single drove in the go-ahead run and proved to be the difference as the Roosevelt softball team edged Calumet St. Joseph, 3-2, in the nightcap of a doubleheader split between the two teams at The Ballpark at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex on Friday.

The Lakers (10-27, 4-12 CCAC) fell to the Crimson Wave (7-33, 6-13 CCAC) in the opener by a final of 8-5 thanks to CCSJ's four-run fourth.

Berni drove in runs in each game, including the decisive run in the fifth of game two after Calumet St. Joseph had scored two in the top of the inning to knot the game. Haley Huss scored the game-winning run after hitting a single, stealing second and advancing to third on an error before Berni drove her in.

Brianna McCormick left runners in scoring position in each of the final two innings to get her fourth save, closing out the win for Brinn Arwood. Arwood went five and struck out six.

Huss and Alyssa Flores drove in runs earlier in the finale to give the Lakers the 2-0 lead.

In the opener, Berni homered and Kassie Kawka drove in two runs, but the Crimson Wave registered 14 hits against RU pitching to post eight runs that were difficult to overcome.

Amber Green excelled for the Lakers in the loss, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
