ORLANDO, Fla. -- In what was set up as a perfect trap match for Roosevelt men's tennis to fall into, the Lakers overwhelmed the University of Scranton (Pa.) 8-1 Sunday at the awe-inspiring USTA National Campus.

"Great, great start to the spring break trip,'' Roosevelt coach Greg Couch said. "I have to admit I was a little worried going in. On paper, we should have had a very slight edge over these guys. But there were so many variables going in.''

The team had arrived in Orlando, where the temperature is in the mid-80s, Saturday afternoon and snuck in an early-evening practice to get used to playing outdoors for the first time in months. Scranton, from Pennsylvania, had already played a match in Florida and were acclimated.

Meanwhile, with the travel logistics, time change and switch to Daylight Savings Time, the Lakers were short on sleep going into a 7:30 a.m. match.

But RU's three doubles teams took the court and started dominating immediately. Kendrick Chong and Kerwin Chong won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. In singles, No. 1 David Wolk, No. 2 Kerwin Chong, No. 5 Jacob Fuqua and No. 6 Francisco Sotelo all won easily.

Nathan Benoit was in a tight match the whole way, and when the momentum had turned against him, he stepped up his aggressiveness, which pressured his opponent, Charles Swope, into mistakes. Benoit won 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 in the super tiebreaker.

This was the first of five matches for the men this week in Florida. Up next, Monday evening is Belhaven University from Mississippi.
