CHICAGO – The Roosevelt women's soccer team saluted its six seniors prior to its regular season finale against Cardinal Stritch at Stuart Field on Saturday, and the Lakers sent off its veterans by giving a strong and valiant effort against the Wolves in a close 2-0 loss.
Head coach Luke Blakely and the program honored seniors Abbey Hand, Marcela Calderon, Alexis Orozco, Zoey Bezilla, Meghan McCue and Monica Munoz and their families during a ceremony before the match.
As for the contest, Roosevelt (2-10-3, 1-9-2 CCAC) gave the league's fourth-ranked team all it could handle as the Lakers and the Wolves (11-5-1, 8-3-0 CCAC) played to a scoreless stalemate for nearly the entirety of the first half.
With 11 seconds left in the opening period, Carolina Branas Soria took a ball from Maiike Rheinfrank and scored from near the top of the box that prevented the two sides from going into intermission deadlocked.
Roosevelt sought the equalizer early in the second half, pushing the pace forward, but Stritch held off the Lakers and eventually added insurance on Kira Schuster's 72nd-minute strike.
Kelsey Heaton made five saves to keep the Lakers in striking distance.
Hand, Munoz and Alexis Kane took the Lakers' shot attempts.
Munoz capped her collegiate career as one of Roosevelt's all-time greats, ending her tenure as the Lakers' second all-time leading offensive player with 24 goals, 12 assists and 60 points. She is the first and, as of now, only All-CCAC First Team selection in program history for her stellar 2017 season.
