CHICAGO - A late first-half goal by St. Francis (Ill.) forward Isabel Cerda proved to be the difference as the Roosevelt women's soccer team fell to the Fighting Saints by a final score of 1-0 at Stuart Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lakers (1-6-2, 0-5-1 CCAC) were led by Marcela Calderon with three shots, while keeper Kelsey Heaton made a save.
The two teams engaged in a defensive battle, and USF (3-6-0, 3-3-0 CCAC) took advantage of a rare opportunity in the 41st minute when Litzy Mendez sent a cross toward goal. Cerda knocked it into the net, and that goal held up despite the Lakers turning up the pressure in the second half by doubling their shot output from the first period and threatening on offense far more after intermission.
Roosevelt had plenty of corner kicks, with a 7-2 advantage in that regard.
The Lakers head to Elgin this Saturday to tangle with the Judson Eagles.
