CHICAGO – On a cold night amidst misting and drizzling conditions, the Roosevelt women's soccer team went on the road and engaged in a defensive battle against host Saint Xavier on Wednesday, and the Lakers' stout defense helped secure a scoreless deadlock at Deaton Field.
Meghan McCue led the Lakers (2-9-3, 1-8-2 CCAC) with three shots and two on target, while fellow senior Monica Munoz added two shots.
Marcela Calderon and Julie Garcia accounted for Roosevelt's other shot attempts.
Keeper Kelsey Heaton earned the clean sheet, making nine saves and holding off frantic attempts late by the Cougars (3-11-2, 3-7-1 CCAC).
Saint Xavier held the shot advantage, but the Lakers' resolve remained steady under the host side's attack and on a slippery pitch due to the weather.
Roosevelt will close out the 2019 regular season this Saturday with a match against Cardinal Stritch at IIT's Stuart Field, at 31st and State Street, beginning at a new start time of 3 p.m. The Lakers will celebrate Senior Day and the careers of Munoz, McCue, Calderon, Zoey Bezilla, Alexis Orozco and Abbey Hand before the match.
