Orozco Scores, Women's Soccer Draws With Bethel (Ind.) 1-1

CHICAGO – Alexis Orozco scored her first goal as a Laker in the 66th minute to give the Roosevelt women's soccer team the lead against visiting Bethel (Ind.), but the Pilots leveled in the 90th minute and the two sides battled to a stalemate the rest of the way in a 1-1 draw at Kroc Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kara Jones made 15 saves for the Lakers (0-3-1), who got their first goal of 2018 from Orozco, a Schaumburg product and Harper College transfer. The junior took a ball from Marcela Calderon and unleashed a long bending shot, only the second attempt of the afternoon off the boot of a Laker, and beat keeper Janae Willis for a beautiful go-ahead goal.

The Lakers continued to withstand pressure from the Pilots (2-0-3), who unleashed 21 shots against a Roosevelt side shorthanded due to a plethora of injuries. Despite the short bench, Roosevelt's defense and Jones in goal were able to keep Bethel off the scoreboard until Kama Hardy sent in a ball from the right side that appeared to be stopped by Jones but landed toward the legs of Meghan Knoff. Knoff put it past Jones and into the net with just 55 ticks left in the second period.

Two overtime periods determined nothing, and both sides came away with the deadlocked decision.

Roosevelt returns to Toyota Park on Wednesday, Sept. 12 to host Clarke (Iowa). Currently the match is scheduled for 4 p.m., but a conflict may push the start time back closer to 5pm or 5:30pm. Updates will be provided on RooseveltLakers.com and @RooseveltLakers.
