MUSCATINE, Iowa - Second-year standout Anibal Mendoza scored what proved to be the decisive goal in the 25th minute, and the Roosevelt men's soccer team scored its first victory of the year with a 1-0 shutout of Grand View (Iowa) on neutral ground on Saturday afternoon.
Roosevelt (1-1-0) launched 16 shots, including Mendoza's left-footed strike with 20 minutes left in the opening period on a ball from the debuting Albert Arabik, and the Lakers' defense pitched its first clean sheet of the year.
Jesus Velasco made a pair of saves in the first half and didn't have too much work in the second thanks to Roosevelt's marking and team defense shining against the Vikings (0-1-0).
Roosevelt tangles with North Park (Ill.) on Chicago's northwest side this Tuesday night.
