Lakers Secure Bye Despite Loss To Wildcats

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Roosevelt clinched a bye in the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament despite a disappointing 2-1 loss to Northern Michigan on Friday in Marquette.

The Lakers needed to win both matches this weekend to secure the regular-season title and No. 1 overall seed for the second straight season. However, Parkside lost earlier Friday, meaning the Lakers secured a bye in the GLIAC Tournament and will be the No. 2 seed. The semifinals and final will be hosted at Saginaw Valley State on Nov. 14 and 16.

In far from ideal weather conditions, the Lakers (9-3-4, 7-2-2 GLIAC) and Wildcats slugged it out for the 35 minutes with the teams trading chances. However, Northern Michigan broke through on a free kick in the 40th minute that barely eluded Eric Carvajal as it rocketed into the upper corner. Roosevelt's chances were further hurt when video review turned a yellow card against the Lakers into a red card, meaning they would have to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

Northern Michigan doubled the lead less than four minutes into the second half, but Roosevelt was not going to go down without a fight. In the 62nd minute, Fynn Mewes controlled a long clearance off a free kick and created enough space for himself to fire a cross-field pass. The ball was placed perfectly into the path of Oskar Schuster, who made no mistake with his volley off a karate-esque lunge.

The Lakers threw everything at the Wildcats over the final 28 minutes in search of an equalizer, but Northern Michigan held strong. Roosevelt forced nine saves out of the Wildcats keeper, including six in the second half despite playing down a man. The Lakers finished with a 16-14 edge in shot attempts and 10-5 lead in shots on goal.

UP NEXT: The Lakers finish the regular season at Parkside on Sunday at noon. Although the game does not affect Roosevelt's seeding for the conference tournament, it has a large impact for the Rangers. Parkside must win or have Northern Michigan tie/lose to secure the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.
