ROSEMONT, Ill. - Madison Lentz fired seven innings of excellent softball and didn't give up a single earned run, but miscues during Saint Xavier's go-ahead three-run sixth erased the Roosevelt softball team's late 1-0 lead and sent the Lakers to a 3-1 loss at The Ballpark at Rosemont on Friday.
Ayumi Davis drove in the sole run on the day for the Lakers (10-30, 5-11 CCAC), and that second-inning run seemed like it could be enough for Lentz. The first-year Roosevelt pitcher was lights out, striking out nine batters and keeping the Cougars (15-10, 6-6 CCAC) off the scoreboard for five-plus innings.
The top of the sixth saw SXU put two runners in scoring position with one out, and Lentz struck out pinch hitter Amanda Ruskowsky to stand one out away from leaving the frame unscathed. But a fielding error at first allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score, and a throwing error from left field moments later allowed insurance to come home.
Roosevelt put the tying run aboard with no outs, but Allison Golic sat down the next three batters to end the game.
Roosevelt will look to bounce back at home this Saturday, April 21 against Trinity International at The Ballpark at Rosemont. First pitch for the twinbill opener is at 5 p.m., and the Lakers will host a bevy of events as part of the #WeRUnited to Pack the Park initiative.
