Gutierrez Heads In Game-Winning Goal, Lifts Women's Soccer To 1-0 Win Versus Holy Cross

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Cynthia Gutierrez headed in a corner kick delivered by Marcela Calderon in the 70th minute, and the Roosevelt women's soccer team entered the win column with a 1-0 shutout of Holy Cross (Ind.) at Toyota Park on Saturday.

Kara Jones made eight saves and the Lakers (1-9-1, 1-5-0 CCAC) added a key team save to keep the sheet clean and break a 10-match winless streak.

Holy Cross (3-9-1, 0-7-0 CCAC) had its chances, but the Lakers proved too much defensively to allow any scoring from the Saints.

In the 70th minute Calderon sent in a ball from the corner toward a scrum in front of the goal, and Gutierrez, seen mostly toward the other end of the field on the backline this year, came forward and knocked in the Calderon kick with her noggin to get the ball past the outreached paw of keeper Sydney Bright.

The Saints had a couple of late looks, including what appeared to be a prime opportunity to level with Jones making a save and hitting the ground but the rebound coming back to a Holy Cross player, but the Roosevelt defense was able to snuff out the threat and keep the shutout intact then and the rest of the way.

Roosevelt heads to Joliet to face St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday evening.
