WHEELING, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team couldn't put away host Trinity International in its doubleheader opener despite a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, setting the stage for the Lakers' tough twinbill loss to the Trojans on Tuesday.
Maddy Janssen and Kelli Jones drove in runs to put Roosevelt (8-14, 1-7 CCAC) up 2-0 and support 6.1 shutout innings from starter Caitlyn Santiago, but Santiago ran into trouble in the seventh and Trinity International (7-15, 3-5 CCAC) forced extras to eventually take a 4-3 decision in eight innings.
The Lakers' offense managed just two hits in the second game, and the Trojans stockpiled runs late to add to an early 1-0 advantage for a 7-0 decision.
Lauryn Lewis went 3-for-4 in the opening game, which appeared to be in the Lakers' grasp until TIU put two on with one away in the bottom of the seventh to chase Santiago and face Janssen in the circle. Alyssa Doomis greeted Janssen by sending the fourth pitch she saw to the leftfield fence for a game-tying two-run double.
Roosevelt seemed to have recovered and reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth when Janssen grounded out to allow Rachel Kubisz to score from third on the rookie's second RBI of the day.
The lead did not last long, as Janssen loaded the bases and hit a batter to force in the tying run. The next batter, Sara Grygus, worked a full count and eventually lifted a fly ball into left for a sac fly that allowed Jessica Vroman to race home with the walk-off run.
Game two was just as close for four frames after TIU's two-out tally in the third inning, but the Trojans broke it open with two runs in the fifth and a four-spot in the sixth while Roosevelt's bats couldn't come close to the Lakers' 10-hit total in game one.
The Lakers will be back in action at Robert Morris Illinois this Thursday in a makeup doubleheader.
