HAMMOND, Ind. – The Roosevelt softball team outhit host Purdue Northwest in both of the two teams' games at Dowling Park on Tuesday, but the Lakers couldn't get a run across to support strong pitching performances as they dropped 1-0 and a 4-0 decisions to the Pride.
Rachel Kubisz went 3-for-3 in the nightcap to register a four-hit day for the Lakers (11-25, 4-18 CCAC), who totaled five hits in the opener and six hits in the finale while the Pride (24-21, 13-9 CCAC) had one less knock in each contest.
Opening-game starter Brinn Arwood shut out Purdue Northwest for six-plus innings, fanning seven hitters in the process, and stood one out away from getting the Lakers to extras when Olivia Sardella hit a single with a runner on second to plate the game-winning run in walk-off fashion.
Game two starter Maddy Janssen was no slouch in the circle. She allowed just three hits in five frames, but the Pride used a two-run third to take the lead and tacked on an unearned run in the fourth. PNW also scored a run in the sixth after Janssen gave up a leadoff walk and was relieved by Brianna McCormick right after the free pass. The leadoff batter eventually got to third and scored on a two-out single.
Roosevelt will close the regular season this Thursday, April 27 against St. Ambrose at The Ballpark at Rosemont at 5 p.m. The Lakers will celebrate the career of four-year veteran Bethany Hart as part of Senior Day festivities.
