Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic: Day Two Recap

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Roosevelt softball team received reinforcements on day two of the 2017 Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

After flight cancellations stranded six Laker players in Chicago and left Roosevelt shorthanded for the first two games of the event, coach Aaron Moore was able to field some different lineups for games against Alderson Broaddus (W.V.) and Williams Woods (Mo.) with a replenished roster.

Taylor Sterkowitz made her first collegiate softball start a memorable game, as the rookie first baseman went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer to spur a comeback that fell just short in a 5-4 loss to NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus.

Caitlyn Santiago made her first collegiate start in the circle and rebounded from a rough three-run first to allow just two runs the rest of the way.

Sterkowitz walloped a 3-0 pitch over the fence in left center with two outs and Amber Green at first base to put the Lakers on the board.

Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Roosevelt made it a one-run game when Maddy Janssen hit a two-run double, plating Kelli Jones and Katrina Yager, with two outs.

Bethany Hart put the ball in play with Janssen at second as the tying run, but the ABU shortstop was able to field it and throw to first for the game-ending out.

The Lakers had a struggle in the second game against a familiar foe in William Woods. Roosevelt struck first with Haley Huss' first-inning RBI single, but the Owls, who played the Lakers in an extra-inning game the day before, scored six times off Rachel Kubisz and eventually departed the field with a 9-1 decision.
