Softball Shuts Out Saint Xavier In Nightcap To Get Doubleheader Split

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt softball team split with host Saint Xavier at the SXU Softball Field on Tuesday, bouncing back from a 4-0 loss in the opener with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Brinn Arwood and Maddy Janssen combined for the shutout of the Cougars, with Arwood scattering five hits in six shutout innings before giving way to Janssen, who tossed a perfect seventh for her first collegiate save. Janssen also went 2-for-3 at the plate in victory.

The Lakers (8-10, 1-3 CCAC) scored the game's only run in the third, when Lauryn Lewis hit a ground ball that was misplayed at first by the Cougars (11-11, 1-3 CCAC) to allow Brooke Lee to come home with what turned out to be the decisive run.

Arwood kept the Lakers in the game by scattering five hits and allowing just one walk. After Arwood issued that walk to the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh, Janssen came on in relief and, after a sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position, induced two foulouts to end the game.

The win marked Roosevelt's first victory over Saint Xavier in 10 all-time meetings.

Janssen had a strong day in the circle, allowing just two earned runs in the opening game, but back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth put SXU on the scoreboard while seven Roosevelt runners were left on base as the guests in Green and White couldn't scratch a run across against SXU starter Amanda Ruskowsky.

Both teams had six hits apiece in the opener, but the Cougars had two big run-scoring hits, including a two-run single by Alyssa Kolecki in the fifth.

Roosevelt will look to carry the momentum of Tuesday's win into a Thursday twinbill at Robert Morris Illinois in Bensenville.
