BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Despite leveling on Cynthia Gutierrez's first goal, the Roosevelt women's soccer team could not overcome the loss of leading goal scorer Monica Munoz to injury early in the Lakers' loss to Trinity International at Toyota Park on Wednesday.
The Lakers (3-7-0, 1-4-0 CCAC) fell to the visiting Trojans (9-3-0, 4-1-0 CCAC) by a final of 6-1.
TIU's Jillian Kolster finished with a hat trick and three assists, having a role in every goal for the guests.
After Makena Walker scored in the second minute of the match to put the Trojans ahead early, Roosevelt pressed forward and Munoz ran up the left flank and turned toward the box. As the RU standout, who has six goals in nine matches heading into Wednesday's game, made a threatening run, she was fouled by Kylie Bowman and sent to the ground with a leg injury. Bowman was given a yellow card for the infraction, and Munoz was carried off the pitch and unavailable the rest of the match.
Despite the huge loss of Munoz, Roosevelt immediately struck back with the equalizer on the reset. Chelsea Olson sent in a beautiful bending ball toward the frame, and Gutierrez cashed in by knocking it into the net for her first goal as a Laker.
The match remained a stalemate until the 23rd minute, when Walker sent a pass to Kolster, who quickly found Bowman for another quick service toward the frame that evaded keeper Kara Jones.
Kolster added goals in the 29th and 35th minutes to give the Trojans a multi-goal advantage heading into halftime, and Kolster and Bowman added goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Roosevelt heads to Palos Heights to face Trinity Christian, a team receiving Top 25 votes, on Saturday at noon.
