ROSEMONT, Ill. – Rain and lightning forced the suspension of the nightcap of the Roosevelt softball team's doubleheader against Cardinal Stritch with the Lakers ahead 5-0 in the bottom of the second at The Ballpark at Rosemont, and Roosevelt's CCAC Tournament qualification hopes now hinge on Monday's twinbill at St. Ambrose.
The Lakers (12-31, 8-13 CCAC) entered the day needing to win three of four games left on the slate in their quest to advance to their first-ever CCAC playoff appearance.
The Wolves (29-11, 17-5 CCAC) took game one behind Tori Burke's two-hit shutout, as the Lakers fell 1-0 in the opener to make the task clear and tournament-esque by having to win three games in a row for an inaugural postseason trip.
Burke took a perfect game into the seventh, but Haley Huss broke it up with one out in the inning by lining a ball down the third base line for a double that put the tying run in scoring position. Burke recovered to get the next two outs for the win.
Roosevelt jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two by sending nine batters to the plate during the first inning. Kelly Crowley and Katie Neubauer drove in runs before Sam Kusta's two-out, two-run single.
The Lakers tacked on another run on Kristy Santora's RBI single before the umpires called for a delay and, after more of a downpour developed and lightning struck multiple times, a suspension of the contest was declared to halt the evening's action.
A makeup of the game will be determined later as officials work to schedule games prior to the finalization of the CCAC Tournament bracket at Tuesday's CCAC postseason coaches meeting.
