BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team held on for a 6-5 win in Saturday's first game against host Olivet Nazarene before the Tigers walked off with a two-run seventh for a 4-3 decision in the second go-around, resulting in a CCAC twinbill split between the two sides at a blustery and chilly Tiger Field.
The Lakers (5-18, 2-4 CCAC) scored five times in the third and held off a furious rally by the Tigers (14-8, 2-2 CCAC) that resulted in a four-run seventh but allowed the Green and White to register a one-run victory in the opener.
Roosevelt scored three times in the fourth inning of Saturday's finale and led 3-2 heading into the seventh before ONU used three straight singles to plate two runs with two outs in the bottom half of that frame to give the hosts a walk-off win.
Bethany Hart went 3-for-4 in the opener, and Sam Kusta drove in two runs in the second contest.
The Lakers tallied five runs in the third during a six-hit barrage. Roosevelt added a key run in the fourth thanks to Kristy Santora's RBI double.
ONU got on the board with a run in the sixth before making things uncomfortable in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring error and a three-run homer that made it a one-run affair.
The Tigers put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run aboard, but Katie Neubauer induced a flyout and a game-ending groundout to avert further damage and an undesirable continuation of the inning.
Roosevelt broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the fourth of game two, as Santora went around the bases and eventually scored on a wild pitch to precede Kusta's two-run single.
The Tigers didn't get on the board until the sixth, when they put up two on RBI singles, and ONU replicated that output in the next inning with two outs as Olivet scratched out five hits, including Alyssa Pusateri's walk-off single to plate the winning run.
