CHICAGO – Paige Gallimore scored a game-high 25 points for the second straight day, and the Roosevelt women's basketball team outlasted visiting Governors State in a 78-71 non-conference win in the consolation final of the 2016 Roosevelt Classic at the Goodman Center on Thursday afternoon.
Becca Bergman added 12 points for the Lakers (9-7), who gutted out a victory despite the Jaguars (3-11) corralling 21 offensive rebounds for 20 second-chance points.
Amber Brooks and Tiana Mericle had double-doubles for the guests, who gave Roosevelt all it could handle in a close game throughout.
Roosevelt led by seven in the final period, but Governors State clawed back and eventually claimed a slim one-point lead late with just over 90 seconds remaining.
Bergman made a pair at the line to give Roosevelt the lead again, and after a steal led to a fast-break chance for Gallimore, Governors State imploded with a flagrant foul and two ejections that led to four free throws made by Gallimore to effectively put the game in the Lakers' control for good as the hosts iced the game at the charity stripe.
Gallimore, who went a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line on Thursday, was named to the Roosevelt Classic All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event, which was won by Concordia (Mich.) after the Cardinals defeated North Central in the championship game later in the day by a final of 99-88.
The Lakers are back in action on Jan. 3 against Robert Morris Illinois in Arlington Heights.
