Women's Basketball Rides Big Second Quarter To Defeat Marian (Wis.), 80-58

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt women's basketball team used an efficient offense and a big second quarter to defeat visiting Marian (Wis.), 80-58, at the Goodman Center on Monday night.

Paige Gallimore scored a game-high 20 points while Emily Duckhorn made five three-pointers for a career-high 15 points for the Lakers (8-5), who shot 53 percent overall and a blistering 68 percent (12-for-18) during a 30-point second stanza.

Leading by three entering the second quarter, Roosevelt scored the period's first seven points and piled on from there.

Even as the Sabres (1-7) tried to stay within striking distance with offensive responses to the Lakers' flurry, Roosevelt had a retort every time. Duckhorn hit three consecutive treys near the end of the second period to keep the Lakers' lead in the 20s heading into halftime, and Roosevelt would never look back.

The ball moved around well for the hosts, and that sharing effort was led by point guard Gina Mathews as the senior handed out a career-best 15 of Roosevelt's 29 assists in the midst of the Lakers' 33 buckets.

The three-point shot accounted for 12 of Roosevelt's baskets, as four Lakers canned at least two from downtown.

Roosevelt heads to Gary, Ind. this Wednesday to take on Indiana Northwest.

Gina Mathews handed out 15 of Roosevelt's 29 assists for a career-best mark that fell three short of matching a school record.
