Williford's Triple-Double Headlines Women's Basketball's Win Over Governors State

CHICAGO – Becky Williford recorded the second triple-double in Roosevelt women's basketball history as the Lakers led from start to finish against Governors State (Ill.) in a 75-58 non-conference victory at the Goodman Center on Saturday.

Williford registered 16 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to join former teammate Tori Clark as the only Lakers in the program's six-year history to chip in double figures across three statistical categories during a single game. Clark's triple-double occurred in 2014.

Paige Gallimore led all scorers with 26 points, while Jasmine Kyler added 13 and Gina Mathews scored 10 off the bench for Roosevelt (14-9).

Raven Phillips led the Jaguars (0-22) with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Roosevelt held Governors State to 29 percent shooting, including a 21-percent clip in the first half, while creating 17 turnovers. The Lakers took advantage of the giveaways by scoring 31 points off GSU miscues, and Roosevelt scored 42 of its points in the paint for a dominating afternoon from close range.

Fueled by Williford's unselfishness, the Lakers had 24 assists on 30 made buckets and led by double digits most of the way.

The Jaguars got within nine in the third quarter, but the Lakers scored 20 unanswered points before Governors State made another shot for a back-breaking burst that put the game away for good.

"This was another great team effort for us today," Roosevelt head coach Keisha Newell said after the game. "When we reel in 20-plus assists, nothing but good things happen. When the team excels, individual accolades follow. That proved to be true tonight for both Paige and Becky. Paige provided the scoring that we needed and supplemented that with a big night on the boards. Becky displayed her all-around game with a triple-double while continuing to lead both by example and vocally.

"I could go down the list and continue to go on and on about what every person on this team does to contribute to what we are building here," Newell said. "I'm very happy with how we are gelling, continuing to buy in, and taking advantage of every opportunity we get."

Roosevelt hosts a St. Ambrose team receiving Top 25 votes in a key CCAC clash at the Goodman Center this Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. Free halftime hot dogs will be provided by the Roosevelt Dining Center at the game.
