Late Offensive Bursts, Dominant Pitching Lift Softball To Doubleheader Sweep At TIU

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Late flurries of offense and superb pitching all afternoon long propelled the Roosevelt softball team to a decisive road twinbill sweep of host Trinity International on Wednesday.

The Lakers (15-21, 9-11 CCAC) won an 8-0 six-inning affair in the opener before replicating that run output with an 8-1 decision in the nightcap.

Morgan Vogt struck out seven and allowed just four hits in a complete-game shutout in the opener, and Katie Neubauer scattered four hits and gave up just a measly unearned run in going the distance for the win in the finale.

Roosevelt exploded for five runs in the sixth during the opener to eventually make it a run-ruled ending, while the Lakers scored seven times in the final four innings of the last game to make it a no-doubt doubleheader sweep against the Trojans (1-28, 0-20 CCAC).

Vogt and Kristy Santora had two hits and two RBI apiece in the first contest, and Sam Kusta drove in three while becoming one of four Lakers with two hits during the last hurrah in Deerfield.

Roosevelt closes the regular season this Thursday with a home doubleheader against Calumet St. Joseph at The Ballpark at Rosemont beginning at 5 p.m., with the Green and White's CCAC Tournament qualifying hopes on the line. Roosevelt needs to win both games and get help from Purdue North Central against Olivet Nazarene on Friday for the Lakers to qualify for next week's seven-team double-elimination league tournament at The Ballpark at Rosemont.

The Lakers will honor seniors Cassie Cook and Amelia Enberg during a ceremony prior to Thursday's opener as part of Senior Day.
