GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A five-run frame in both of the Roosevelt softball team's games was what doomed the Lakers on the first day of the Davenport Classic on Friday.
The Lakers lost a three-run lead in the final inning when Cornerstone scored five times in the top of the seventh in Roosevelt's heartbreaking 10-8 loss to start the afternoon.
Then the Green and White could not muster anything against 18th-ranked Davenport on the Panthers' home field, as the hosts blanked Roosevelt by a final of 7-0.
Amanda Ferguson hit a go-ahead three-run homer during a four-run fifth that put the Lakers up in the game against Cornerstone, while Katie Neubauer had a two-run blast and Alexis Funk had three hits.
The Lakers committed costly errors in Cornerstone's four-run first and decisive five-run seventh. The seventh-inning error came with two out and allowed the go-ahead and insurance runs to cross the plate.
Kristy Santora had a pair of hits against Davenport, but the host Cougars scored five times in the fourth and never looked back in the day's finale for the Lakers.
Roosevelt caps the Davenport Classic on Saturday with two games against Aquinas.
