GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Host Aquinas scored early in the first and second periods, and the Roosevelt men's soccer team couldn't make its significant shot advantage produce more than Evan Trychta's second-half goal in a 3-1 road loss on Saturday.
Roosevelt (0-2-0) outshot Aquinas (2-0-0) 17-9, unleashing 14 of those attempts after halftime, and held a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.
While the Lakers finished the game with high volume in the shots department, it was the Saints who started off with efficiency by turning the match's first shot into a goal by Ryan Wagenmaker in the fourth minute.
Things settled down until the early moments of the second half, when Wagenmaker found Peter Bradenburg for a goal in the 47th minute to make it a 2-0 game.
Seven minutes later it was Trychta who tallied his first goal in a Roosevelt kit off of Jose Garcia's second assist in as many games and a pass from Cristhian Jimenez to cut the Lakers' deficit in half.
But Aquinas responded in the 66th minute on Aldony Mendez's unassisted marker, and that is how the score stayed despite the Lakers' push ahead.
Garcia recorded seven shots, giving him 16 shots through the first two games of his college career.
Roosevelt hosts Clarke next Saturday, Sept. 6 at Toyota Park beginning at 2 p.m.
