MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Alexis Funk hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the sixth to lift the Roosevelt softball team to a 3-2 win over host Cardinal Stritch and ensure a doubleheader split against the host Wolves on Tuesday.
The Lakers (17-27, 8-9 CCAC) dropped a narrow 3-1 nightcap to the Wolves (30-21, 10-8 CCAC) after the comeback win in the opener.
Trailing 1-0 in the first game, Roosevelt started the sixth with Amanda Ferguson's leadoff single. Two batters later it was Morgan Vogt who replicated that feat to drive Ferguson in with the tying run.
That brought up Funk, who continued her clutch offensive play this season with a shot over the wall to turn a 1-1 game into a 3-1 contest in favor of the Green and White.
Cardinal Stritch scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Lakers' lead to one, and Vogt evaded trouble in the bottom of the seventh after allowing a leadoff single by getting three straight outs to clinch the win.
Two-baggers accounted for all of the scoring in game two. Stritch struck first on a two-run double in the second. Roosevelt cut its deficit in half thanks to an RBI double crushed by Katie Neubauer in the top of the fourth, but Stritch extended the lead back to two on a sixth-inning run-scoring double, and that's how the game stayed as, with Sam Kusta at first and two out in the seventh, Kelly Crowley was called out on strikes to cap the contest.
Roosevelt resumes its suspended game against No. 4 Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The game will start in the bottom of the third with ONU up 5-1.
