MORRISON, Ill. – An offensive surge by William Penn and a near-perfect game by Olivet Nazarene's Virgina McAndrews made Saturday a tough finale to the Ashford Spring Jamboree for the Roosevelt softball team, as the Lakers were dealt a pair of losses to conclude their stay.
The Lakers (10-23) lost an early one-run lead when the Statesmen (24-13) posted four multi-run innings from the third through the game-ending sixth to overtake the Green and White by a final of 11-3.
Roosevelt then ran into a buzzsaw in the circle for the seventh-ranked Tigers, as McAndrews retired 15 of the 16 batters she faced and allowed just a hit batter to reach base during a hitless, walk-free showing in ONU's 8-0 win in five.
Katie Neubauer went 2-for-3 against William Penn, while Alexis Funk and Sam Kusta continued to perform well at the plate with RBI singles.
Roosevelt took the early lead against the Statesmen when Kusta scored on a wild pitch in the second.
The lead lasted until the third, when William Penn scored three times thanks to three hits, including a big two-run single by Jorden Steele.
The Statesmen tacked on three more in the fourth, with two coming by way of Brittanee Grove's two-run homer.
William Penn scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth, and Roosevelt could only get single tallies on the board during their portion of those frames.
There was not much the Lakers could do against McAndrews, who handcuffed the Green and White while her teammates scored two in the first and a back-breaking four in the second. Two of those four charged to Bethany Hart were unearned after an error at third.
Roosevelt looks to bounce back when the Lakers face Purdue North Central in a CCAC road doubleheader this Sunday starting at noon.
