Funk's Homer, No-Hitter Fuel Softball's Nightcap Win, Twinbill Split Against St. Ambrose

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team scored seven times in the third inning of its nightcap to support Alexis Funk's no-hitter against St. Ambrose and secure a non-conference doubleheader split at The Ballpark at Rosemont on Friday.

Roosevelt (8-9) won the second game 10-0 in five innings after falling to the Bees (10-8) 10-1 in the opener.

Funk was the hero in the circle and at the plate in the second game. She set the stage for the Lakers' big seven-run frame in the third with a two-run homer while mowing down the Bees in the circle with five hitless innings.

Amanda Ferguson and Katie Neubauer had back-to-back two-run hits in that third, while Kelly Crowley drove in another run on a triple down the leftfield line to cap a surge that turned a 3-0 lead into an insurmountable 7-0 advantage.

Shortstop Sam Kusta preserved Funk's no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a diving catch up the middle for a flashy third out.

Funk and the defense did the rest, retiring the Bees in the fifth to keep the no-hitter and shutout intact and close out the run-ruled affair.

Friday's first game was deadlocked after three, thanks to Ferguson's game-tying run-scoring single to plate Kristy Santora from third with two outs in the bottom of the third after Santora tripled earlier in the inning.

But the Bees responded in the next half-inning, scoring three times on Tricia Miller's bases-loaded double to put the guests up 4-1.

That's how the game would stay as the Lakers couldn't muster much offense against Kathryn Brown, who sat down seven, until the Bees padded their lead with two in the sixth and a four-spot in the seventh.

Roosevelt continues its homestand against Ashford this Sunday, March 30 at 5 p.m. inside The Ballpark at Rosemont.
