SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Roosevelt women's soccer team unleashed a game-high 21 shots in what turned out to be a battle of defensive wills against Holy Cross on Saturday, but a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation elicited an overtime session that saw the Saints' Karina Cain score the golden goal in the 95th minute as the Lakers suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at Saints Field.
The Lakers fell to 4-9-0 and 1-5-0 in the CCAC, while the Saints are now 3-10-0 and 1-5-0 in the league.
Sydney Hebel made six saves, all in the second half, and played impeccably between the posts in conjunction with the Lakers' stout defense in front of her to hold the hosts scoreless for 94-plus minutes.
After the two teams combined for 13 shots in the first half, Roosevelt unleashed 15 on its own in the second period to end the match with a 21-19 advantage in attempts.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, it was Holy Cross' 19th attempt that proved the difference as Kaylee Ables sent in a through ball to Cain, who finished in the top left corner for the game-winning goal five minutes into the extra session.
