Softball Downed Twice On Opening Day Of Olivet Invitational

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Roosevelt softball team opened its stay at the 2013 Olivet Nazarene Invitational at Tiger Field on Friday, falling victim to a six-run seventh inning and losing a three-run lead to Trinity Christian in a 7-4 loss before dropping a 5-0 contest to the 19th-ranked Tigers on ONU's home field.

Roosevelt fell to 5-17 on the season.

Starting pitcher Morgan Youskevtch tossed six innings in both games, allowing just two earned runs.

In the opener, the Lakers churned out 11 hits, paced by two-hit performances from Amanda Ferguson, Morgan Vogt and Kelly Crowley at the top of the order and Taylor Edwards at the bottom of the lineup, and rallied from an early one-run deficit to even the game in the second and go ahead in the fifth. Crowley drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the contest, and Edwards doubled to plate a run in the fifth for the Lakers' first lead.

Roosevelt put up two in the sixth, with Ferguson's double and Vogt sac fly driving in runs in back-to-back at-bats.

But needing just three outs to get their third straight victory, the Lakers were unable to close out the game. Trinity Christian (7-13) scored six unearned runs against reliever Katherine Daley, as two Roosevelt errors set the stage for a pair of devastating two-run doubles by the Trolls.

The Lakers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

In the second game of the day, the host Tigers (26-3) took advantage of three more Roosevelt miscues to score four unearned runs, and that proved to be all that they needed as the arm of Caitlin Santefort unfurled a three-hit shutout of the Green and White.

Ten of Roosevelt's 12 runs allowed during the day were of the unearned variety.

The Lakers conclude their stay at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational with rematches against the Trolls and the Tigers on Saturday, beginning at noon against Trinity Christian.
