Women's Soccer Shuts Down Benedictine-Springfield, 2-0, For Second Straight Victory

Springfield, Ill. - The Roosevelt University women's soccer team went on the road and shutout Benedictine-Springfield, 2-0, for its second-consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Lakers move to 2-2-0, as Benedictine drops to 0-3-0 on the season. Roosevelt's Briana Maddox and Sam Anderson scored for Roosevelt, with both goals coming in the second half.

"The team created a variety of opportunities in both the first and second halves," head coach Shaun Kohn said. "Credit the backs and goalkeeper Sydney Self for the shutout, and at the end of the day the possession advantage the team had made the difference."

In the first half the Lakers were on the front foot from the first whistle, though chance after chance Roosevelt was unable to finish.

In the second half, it was more of the same as the field tilted toward the Benedictine net. Finally, in the 57th minute, Nikki Saucedo hit a cross from the right width that found Ruby Moran just on top of the six-yard box, and Moran, with her back to goal, found Maddox who put the Lakers up 1-0.

Just two minutes later Ahissa Bustos slotted a ball for Sam Anderson, who finished putting the Lakers up 2-0.

The 2-0 score line is the first shutout in the young history of the Roosevelt women's soccer program.

The Lakers will be back in action when they travel to LaCrosse, Wisconsin to take on Viterbo University at 1 p.m.
