Davis Surpasses 1,000 Career Points, Women's Basketball Beats Holy Cross

Notre Dame, Ind. – Casey Davis became the first player in Roosevelt women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points, and fellow junior Maria Tamburrino notched her third double-double of the season in the Lakers' 68-58 road win over Holy Cross at McKenna Arena on Saturday.

Tamburrino scored 22 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for the Lakers (5-1, 3-1 CCAC).

Davis finished the day with 13 points, scoring the game's first bucket to hit 999 career points and then reaching 1,000 on the next trip down the floor by hitting the first of a pair of free throws. Her all-time Roosevelt scoring record now stands at 1,010 points and counting.

Lindsey Steffen scored 18 to lead the Saints (1-5, 0-3 CCAC).

Tamburrino was a force in the first half, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds to go with two threes and two steals in 16 minutes. Her play helped Roosevelt break open an 18-point lead in the first and hold the Saints to just 7-for-30 shooting (23.3 percent).

Both teams would struggle from the field and the foul line, but the Lakers used a dominating effort on the glass to overwhelm the Saints. Roosevelt outrebounded Holy Cross by 25, aided by 26 offensive rebounds that helped the Lakers score 21 second-chance points.

Roosevelt led by as many as 23 in the second half and held a 22-point lead with just over four minutes remaining. The Saints would put on a press against the young Laker reserves in game's final minutes and cut the deficit down to 10, but that was as close as the hosts could get as Roosevelt held off the rally attempt.

"Any win on the road is a good win this early in conference play, " said Roosevelt head coach Robyn Scherr-Wells. "Maria played a fantastic game on both ends of the court. She helped us open up a nice lead in the first half."

Scherr-Wells was also happy to see Davis reach a huge milestone on Saturday.

"I am very proud of Casey Davis becoming the first 1,000-point scorer in the history of Roosevelt," said said. "She has done a remarkable job of improving her game each year."

Roosevelt returns home to host the Titans of Indiana University South Bend this Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the UIC Physical Education Building. Tip time is 5:30 p.m.
