Chicago, Ill. - The Roosevelt women's basketball team opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play in impressive fashion, rolling to an 87-66 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at the Keating Sports Center.
The Lakers, now 12-5 on the season, also extended their season-best winning streak to four games with the victory and now sit atop the CCAC after their first-ever league game. The Saints, meanwhile, fell to 7-11, 0-1 in conference with the loss.
All five starters scored in double figures for Roosevelt, led by freshman Maria Tamburinno's game-high 20 points. Freshman Casey Davis finished with 17 points and six steals, rookie Kiara Towles collected a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Peggie Parhas and freshman Tori Clark scored 16 and 10, respectively, for the Lakers.
Roosevelt was able to capitalize on its pressure defense, turning 21 Saints turnovers into 36 points. The Lakers also controlled the boards, outrebounding St. Francis (Ill.) by a 50-35 margin.
Roosevelt was clinging to just a 55-52 lead with 11:59 remaining in contest when a Parhas three-point play sparked a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to give the Lakers a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.
Julie Schiffler led three Saints in double figures with 17 points.
Roosevelt will look to continue its winning ways on Tuesday night when the Lakers travel to Bourbonnais, Ill., to take on Olivet Nazarene at 7:00 p.m.
