CHICAGO - It was a busy week for the Lakers Esports program, with the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, League of Legends, and VALORANT teams all competing in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Lakers Smash took on defending GLIAC Tournament champions Michigan Tech on Monday night, falling 2-0 to the Huskies in a competitive battle.
Game 1 went down to the wire, with Michael "Avian!" Noel kicking things off by taking 4 stocks from Michigan Tech. The Huskies managed to gain control after Noel went out, and despite the 4-stock performance from Afaan "Chito" Ali, Michigan Tech would go on to win 2-0.
The Huskies carried momentum into game 2, incrementally building their lead throughout the match. Michigan Tech's opener took 5 stocks from the Lakers before bowing out, and any hope of a comeback was snuffed out as Roosevelt went on to lose 5-0.
UP NEXT: Lakers Smash will look to get back in the win column next Monday at 6 pm with a date against Grand Valley State.
League of Legends
Roosevelt LoL marched to 4-0 in GLIAC action, with a dominant 2-0 win over Ferris State Wednesday night.
The first game was a beatdown, with Roosevelt totaling a remarkable team K/D ratio of 24/5. No Laker died more than twice, with two surviving the entire 24-minute and 54-second game, and 4 of Ferris State's players combining for just 2 kills. Jun "enryu" Huang went unharmed as the ADC, with a KDA of 10/0/9 and a kill participation of 79.2%. Zachary "Potato" Depeder was excellent in the support role as always, matching Huang's kill participation of 79.2% with a 2/2/17 KDA. Captain Leswin Ramirez was the other Laker to go the whole round without a death, finishing 5/0/5 in the mid lane, while jungler Camden "ankh1" Peters and top laner Dexter "Dex" Espindola combined for a KDA of 7/3/17.
Game 2 was more competitive, with the Lakers mustering a 27/18 team K/D and defeating the Ferris State Nexus in 28 minutes and 50 seconds. Peters was the standout, finishing 12/1/4 with a whopping 16.0 KDA ratio, with Ramirez finishing 5/2/13. Depeder chipped in another 18 assists, right on his average of 18.1 per game in GLIAC play.Â
"I appreciate my team for coming in, taking care of business with swift 2-0 wins week after week, and I hope we maintain this undefeated streak," said Ramirez after the match. The Lakers are yet to drop a single game and are one of two undefeated teams in the GLIAC, winning games in an average of 26 minutes and 42 seconds.
UP NEXT: The LoL squad looks ahead to a huge matchup next week, as they'll battle Purdue Northwest, the only other undefeated team in GLIAC play, on Wednesday at 6 pm.
VALORANT
Roosevelt VALORANT exercised demons on Thursday night, taking down Davenport 2-0 (13-6, 13-9) in a rematch of last season's GLIAC Tournament final.
After a week off from conference action, the Lakers picked up right where they left off, jumping all over the Panthers on Lotus. After both teams took turns winning a pair of rounds, Roosevelt went on a 9-1 run, pushing its lead to 11-3. Davenport managed to stop the bleeding by taking 3 rounds, but the Lakers wouldn't let the Panthers get any closer, taking the last 2 rounds to win the first game 13-6. Davenport managed to pick up the first blood in 12 of the game's 19 rounds, but it wasn't enough to slow Roosevelt down, as the Lakers frequently turned rounds around despite being down in numbers. Henry Nguyen led the way for Roosevelt, finishing 21/10/6 with a pair of first bloods, while Kyle "eigne" Caruso contributed a KDA of 17/12/10. In-game leader Ethan "echo" Cho contributed a game-high 20 assists, twice as many as any other player, and Ryan "expn" Krajewski went 15/14/6 as Roosevelt took the first game in 33 minutes and 21 seconds.
It was the Lakers turn to pick the map in the second game, and in a back and forth battle, Roosevelt defeated Davenport 13-9 on Sunset. The two teams went back and forth, trading blows the entire way. At halftime, Roosevelt held a 7-5 lead, with Davenport taking 4 of the next 6 rounds to even things up at 9 rounds apiece. It was all Lakers from there, as the men in green took each of the next 4 rounds to wrap up the win. Chris "hysteria" Mackrodt paced Roosevelt in kills, finishing 19/18/9, while Caruso matched his tally from the first game with 17 kills. All 5 Lakers finished with an even or positive K/D, taking down the Panthers in 38 minutes and 11 seconds.
UP NEXT: The undefeated Lakers will take on Wayne State in the first ever VALORANT matchup between the programs at 6 pm next Thursday.
