Roosevelt Esports Recap: Week 6

CHICAGO - It was a successful week for Roosevelt Esports, with the Smash, LoL, and VALORANT teams all picking up dominant victories.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Lakers Smash snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday with a dominant 2-0 (7-0, 4-0) victory over Wayne State.

Roosevelt only needed two players to defeat the Warriors in the first game, with Afaan "Chito" Ali getting things started for the Lakers by going 3-1, 3-0, and 2-2 against Wayne State's first three competitors. The 8 stocks taken by Ali were a season high for the junior, as he set up team captain Michael "Avian!" Noel to finish the job. Noel went 1-0 and 3-2 to seal the deal for Roosevelt, with the Lakers losing just 5 stocks overall.

The second game was a bit closer, with Roosevelt finding themselves down 3 stocks at the start of the match. Noel brought the Lakers back into it, going 3-2 and 1-1 to make it 8-6 in favor of the Warriors. Juan "Shmunguss" Sanchez finally got a chance to play, mirroring Ali's effort in the first round and going 2-1, 3-0, and 3-1 to take all 8 of Wayne State's remaining stocks and finish off the win for Roosevelt.

UP NEXT: Lakers Smash is back in action against Davenport next Monday at 6 pm.

League of Legends

It was Lakers versus Lakers in Summoner's Rift on Wednesday night, with Roosevelt dominating Grand Valley State 2-0 and moving to 6-0.

Game one was a blowout, with Roosevelt accumulating a team K/D ratio of 36/9 and defeating the Grand Valley State Nexus in just over 20 minutes. Jun "Enryu" Huang almost went untouched as the ADC, finishing with a KDA of 16/1/8 and a team-best kill participation of 67%, while Zachary "Potato" Depeder was right on his average of 18 assists per game, adding 5 kills to just 3 deaths. Jungler Eli "Radar" Nelson finished 7/1/14 for a kill participation of 58%, and all 5 Roosevelt players finished with an even or positive K/D. On the flip side, Grand Valley State's entire roster finished negative, with their best performer finishing with a meek KDA of 3/4/0.

Game two finished even quicker, with Roosevelt defeating Grand Valley State in 19 minutes and 22 seconds. Roosevelt went 34/11 as a team, with Depeder registering an incredible 23 assists and finishing with a 74% kill participation. Huang was excellent again, going 14/3/8, while Nate "BetterthanNeve" Cheeran stepped up and went 11/1/5 in the mid lane. Dexter "RU Dex" Espindola rounded out Roosevelt's squad, improving on his solid first round and finishing 4/2/9 in the top lane in round two.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt LoL aims to get to 7-0 next Wednesday at 6 pm, as they look ahead to a date with Michigan Tech.

VALORANT

Lakers VALORANT took on Ferris State Wednesday night, defeating the Bulldogs 2-0 (13-5, 13-10) to remain undefeated in league play.

Ascent was the setting for map one, with Roosevelt setting the tone early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Ferris State managed to get on the board. That was all the Bulldogs were able to muster in the first half, with the Lakers winning all eight of the remaining rounds before the switch and building an astonishing 11-1 lead at halftime. Ferris State did manage to take four rounds after the break, but Roosevelt ultimately sealed the deal in 18 rounds. Kyle "eigne" Caruso was remarkable, leading the Lakers with a whopping 27 kills and also chipping in 3 first bloods. Caruso died just 7 times and added 6 assists to round out his impressive performance. Keith "Mask" Clark was second on the team in kills, finishing with a 19/12/6 KDA and adding a team-high 4 first bloods, while Ryan "expn" Krajewski went 15/10/7. Four of the five Roosevelt competitors finished with a positive K/D ratio, while all 5 Bulldogs were below the .500 threshold.

Map two was much closer, with the Lakers ultimately winning 13-10 on Split. A back-and-forth first half resulted in a 6-6 tie at the break, making it a race to 7 in the second frame. The two teams were locked at 9-9 before Roosevelt used a 3-0 run in rounds 19-21 to pull away, eventually securing the victory in the 23rd round. Krajewski was the star, leading the way with a game-high 32 kills to just 17 deaths, adding 12 assists and 6 first bloods. Henry Nguyen was second on the leaderboard for the Lakers, finishing with a KDA of 26/21/15, while Clark did his part with 6 first bloods.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will look to go to 5-0 on the season as they take on Grand Valley State at 6 pm next Thursday.
