Carvajal Named GLIAC Defensive Player Of Week

BAY CITY, Mich. – For the second consecutive time, Roosevelt goalie Eric Carvajal was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The senior from Arlington Heights was the last award winner of the 2024 season, and picked up right where he left off by claiming the first weekly award of the 2025 campaign. Carvajal made a league-leading 11 saves in Roosevelt's first two games, backstopping the Lakers to an unbeaten first weekend of action.

In Thursday's opener, Carvajal made five saves to help the Lakers start the season on the right foot with a 1-0 win over Thomas More in Kentucky. He followed that up by making six stops Saturday, including saving a penalty kick, as the Lakers drew 1-1 against Ohio Dominican. In addition to his league-leading 11 saves, the senior leads the GLIAC with a .917 save percentage after the first two games.

Carvajal ended last season on a remarkable run of form, and that has only continued to start this year. In his last seven starts, the senior has protected five 1-0 victories and the other two games finished as 1-1 draws. Those two goals he allowed were both from set pieces with Saginaw Valley State scoring on a free kick and Ohio Dominican converting a penalty kick.

The Arlington Heights native has not allowed a goal from open play since Oct. 20 of last season against Parkside. In the interim, he has stopped 29 shots in those seven games for a .935 save percentage. Carvajal has also stopped five of the last seven penalties he has faced not in a penalty shootout.

Roosevelt opens its home schedule Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. against Missouri St. Louis at Morris Field.
