Gabriel Koenig Named Roosevelt's Third Academic All-American

CHICAGO – Roosevelt senior defender Gabriel Koenig was voted an Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

Koenig earned his second consecutive Academic All-District honor last month from CSC after being named a first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defender this season. The senior from Fuerth, Germany is the third Lakers player to ever be named an Academic All-American and the first male student-athlete in school history. He joins women's basketball star Becky Williford (2015-16) and softball standout Amanda Ferguson (2015) on the prestigious list of Roosevelt Academic All-Americans.

The defender advanced onto the All-American ballot for the second straight year and was one of 40 defenders to make the cut. After a vote from the entire CSC membership, Koenig was one of 12 Division II defenders to be named Academic All-American. He is one of just two GLIAC players to earn Academic All-America honors this season along with St. Cloud State's Phillip Caputo, who was also a second-team choice.

Koenig holds a 3.94 grade point average and has been named to the Dean's List all six semesters at Roosevelt while majoring in marketing. He is a member of the Roosevelt University Investment Club and a member of the National Society of Leadership. He also provides tutoring services in the Roosevelt University Learning Commons.

On the field, Koenig played all but four minutes for the Lakers this season as a team captain and was a big reason Roosevelt allowed just one goal per game and kept five clean sheets over the final eight matches of the season. He tied his career high with two goals and five points in leading the Lakers to a share of the GLIAC regular-season title in their first season as a Division II program.

The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports in all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. It was established in 1952 and the honorees are nominated by CSC members then All-American honors are voted on by the membership as well.
