Lakers Drop GLIAC Home Opener Against Purdue Northwest

CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not overcome Purdue Northwest in its first home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match of the season Friday at XS Tennis.

The Lakers took the doubles point off the Pride in women's action despite having to default at No. 3 doubles. Yet the forfeit at No. 6 singles ended up costing Roosevelt in the 4-3 loss. On the men's side, Juan Pablo Espinosa scored the only point for Roosevelt in a 6-1 loss to Purdue Northwest that ended up slightly more lopsided.

Already entering the doubles section needing to win both matches to secure the point, Roosevelt got an early lift from the pair of Sophie Christie and Teodora Petrica. The No. 1 duo picked up an early break then held on for a 6-3 win, sending everyone's eyes to No. 2 doubles. Malena Moya and Varvara Ogorodnikova both held late in the match then overcame the Pride in the tiebreaker for a 7-6 win.

The Lakers quickly went up 2-1 thanks to Petrica easily dispatching her opponent at No. 1 singles. The 6-2, 6-3 win did not send momentum the rest of the way for Roosevelt, unfortunately. Quick losses at No. 3 and No. 4 singles gave the Pride a 3-2 lead with Moya and Ogorodnikova still on the court. Moya ran into some tough luck in a straight-sets loss, but Ogorodnikova battled for a three-set win after dropping the first set.

Ogorodnikova bounced back from losing the opening set by cruising to a 6-2 win in the second, setting up the deciding third set. The freshman seemed to be in control of the third set with an early break, but could not serve out the match late. After losing momentum during the latter half of the set, Ogorodnikova found her mojo in the tiebreak and held off her opponent for a third point for Roosevelt.

The men's doubles point was competitive with all three matches going back-and-forth for much of the time. Espinosa and Lakshay Vivek held on for a 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Pride had already eked out wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to claim the first point. In singles action, Justus Peters was edged out at the No. 4 spot, the only competitive match of the slate. Espinosa rode his infectious energy to a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles for Roosevelt's only point.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt stays at XS Tennis next weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches at its home court. The Lakers face Wayne State next Friday before taking on Ferris State on April 12.
