Five Lakers Honored With All-GLIAC Distinction

BAY CITY, Mich. – Five Roosevelt softball players earned all-conference honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Lakers placed three on the second team with senior Brynn Dvoracek and sophomores Ella Dvoracek and Kailey Hancock. Senior Athena Pomele-Pen and freshman Rebecca Urbaniak were honorable mention selections as well.

Ella Dvoracek was a force at the top of the lineup for Roosevelt while also starting every game this year. She led the team by batting .373 overall and .432 when leading off an inning, and got on base nearly 42 percent of the time. Her 37 runs scored were more than twice as many as any other Lakers player and ranked seventh in the GLIAC. The Downers Grove native also finished fourth in the league with 57 hits, which included a pair of inside-the-park home runs this season.

Brynn, the elder Dvoracek sister, is now a three-time all-conference honoree after twice being named to the all-conference team in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The first baseman started all 46 games for the Lakers and led the team with 36 RBIs from the clean-up position in the lineup. In 140 at-bats, Dvoracek had a team-low 13 strikeouts with a .358 on-base percentage.

"It's rare to see siblings compete at this level together, and even more rare to see them both recognized for their outstanding performances in the same season," Roosevelt head coach Michele Alexander said. "Brynn has been a consistent leader for us – setting the tone with her experience, poise, and competitive spirit. Her impact on our program will continue on as we continue to build on the foundation that she has helped create.

"Ella has done a phenomenal job this year.  Her hard work has not only elevated her game but has also set a standard for excellence within our program. This honor reflects her commitment to continuous improvement and her invaluable contribution to our team's success."

Hancock was another player who had a standout sophomore campaign with an 8-11 record and 3.46 ERA in 29 appearances. She struck out 52 batters and walked just 24 hitters in 123.1 innings in the circle. Only one pitcher walked fewer batters in the GLIAC all season, but that pitcher hit 25 batters while Hancock plunked just three. The Chicago native saved her best for the end of the season with a 4-3 record and 2.35 ERA over her final seven starts to help the Lakers rally to qualify for the conference tournament.

"We're incredibly proud of Kailey and all the hard work she's put in this season," Alexander said. "Earning second team All-GLIAC as a sophomore is a testament to her consistency, drive, and impact on the field. She leads by example every day, and we're excited to see how she continues to grow in her career here at Roosevelt."

Pomele-Pen missed the first four conference games this season, but came back with a vengeance over the second half of GLIAC action. Over the last 14 games, the senior hit .442 with seven doubles, a home run and 16 RBIs while getting on base in nearly half of her plate appearances. Overall this season, the San Jose, California native hit .326 with 29 RBIs while finishing third in the league with 12 doubles. This is also Pomele-Pen's third all-conference honor in her career after receiving two in the CCAC.

Urbaniak was perhaps the most clutch freshman in the GLIAC, coming through with big hits in big moments consistently for the Lakers. The Homewood native hit .289 with 19 RBIs, but many of those runs batted in came when Roosevelt needed it the most. Most notably, her walk-off double against Davenport on the last weekend of the season clinched Roosevelt's spot in the conference tournament.

"Athena's recognition is a reflection of the outstanding season she's had," Alexander said. "She was a consistent force in our lineup and a true leader on and off the field. As a senior, she brought experience, composure, and heart to everything she did. She's been a cornerstone of our program for four years, and we're incredibly proud of the legacy she leaves behind.

"Rebecca made an immediate impact in her first year, and being named Honorable Mention All-GLIAC is a testament to her versatility and drive," Alexander continued. "She took on multiple roles – pitching, playing the field, and contributing at the plate – and did so with confidence and consistency. Her work ethic and competitive mindset set the tone, and we're excited for the future she's building here at Roosevelt."

Roosevelt is scheduled to open GLIAC Tournament action Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex as the No. 6 seed against third-seeded Ferris State.
