Roosevelt's Senior Day Spoiled By Ferris State

ROSEMONT – Roosevelt could not convert on its scoring chances Saturday afternoon and dropped both games of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Ferris State at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

The Lakers lost both games by identical 5-2 scores with the two games having a few other similarities. In both contests, Roosevelt (17-29, 11-17 GLIAC) had an early lead and in both games, the Bulldogs had one big inning that proved to be the difference in the scoreline.

FERRIS STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 2
Neither team was able to do anything in the first two innings as both pitchers breezed through the lineups in order. Kailey Hancock threw three perfect innings for the Lakers to start in the circle and Isis Enriquez broke through with a single in the bottom of the third. Caitlin Williams sacrificed Enriquez to second and Ella Dvoracek came up with the perfect slap single to third base to place runners on the corners.

Dvoracek stole second unchallenged while Kendall Pearson looked at ball one. The centerfielder then hit a sharp single to third base that scored Enriquez and allowed Dvoracek to reach third on the throw. Athena Pomele-Pen walked to load the bases with two outs in the third, but Brynn Dvoracek's line drive was snagged to end the threat.

Ferris State scored four times in the top of the fourth inning after taking advantage of a Roosevelt error to begin the frame that put a runner in scoring position. The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth, but the Lakers had two more innings of fight left in them.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brynn Dvoracek walked then Rebecca Urbaniak was hit by a pitch to put the first two batters on base. Libby Kreykes laid down the sacrifice bunt to move over the runners, and Bianca Gallegos delivered on Senior Day with an RBI single. Williams loaded the bases with a two-out walk before the Bulldogs escaped on a fielder's choice to the left side of the infield.

Roosevelt again put the first two runners on in the seventh inning to put pressure on the Bulldogs. Pearson reached third after being hit by pitch then taking two bases on Pomele-Pen's single. However, the Lakers recorded three straight outs with the tying run at the plate and finished the game with 10 runners left on base.

FERRIS STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 2
Ferris State took the lead in the second inning on an unearned run after an error in the field allowed a runner to reach. Enriquez again started the game-tying rally in the third inning, this time reaching on an infield single to the left of the pitcher's circle. Williams walked and Ella Dvoracek hit a pseud-sacrifice to the shortstop to advance the runners.

Pearson delivered the game-tying hit with a single into right field but attempted to take second base on what she thought would be a throw home. Instead, Williams scored a second run for the Lakers while the Bulldogs caught Pearson in a rundown before tagging her out.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth inning on a well-placed infield single with two outs. They nearly took the lead in the sixth inning with runners on second and third with no outs, but Pearson denied Ferris State to continue her Gold Glove-worthy year in centerfield. The outfielder came up firing on a flyball into shallow centerfield and her throw easily beat the runner tagging up to home plate and Kreykes applied the simple tag.

Roosevelt had a runner reach in the bottom of the sixth on an error, but it was the Lakers' own miscue that cost them dearly. After Ferris State had already scratched across a run to take the lead, a rushed throw sailed past first base after a groundball and allowed two more runs to come across for the Bulldogs.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will be the No. 6 seed in the GLIAC Tournament next week in Rosemont. The Lakers will play at 1:30 p.m. against the No. 3 seed, which will be determined after Sunday's action.
