Louis Paces Lakers To Strong Finish At Lake Michigan Open

KENOSHA, Wis. – Angela Louis scored 14 points for Roosevelt to help the women's track and field team take third place at the Lake Michigan Open on Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.

The senior sprinter started her day by easily winning her heat in the 55-meter preliminaries, qualifying her in fourth position for the final. In the final, she ran a 7.62-second race to finish third and claim six points for the Lakers. Louis then took on the 200-meter dash and finished in 26.97 seconds, barely getting clipped for the top spot and earning another 14 points.

Roosevelt's women's team finished with 41 total points, besting Lake Forest, Marquette and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Purdue Northwest, among others in the meet. Khaniya Higginbotham also ran a strong meet with a sixth-place finish in the 55 meters and third place in the 400 meters in a time of 1:01.50.

Freshman Kennilyn Alexander added two points to the total with a fifth-place finish in the 55 meters then tacked on four more by finishing fourth in the 200.                Cristin Moreno took home two points for finishing ninth in the 800 meters and Gloria Romero claimed all 10 points in the 3000 meters with a third-place finish behind a pair of University of Wisconsin runners. Angie Delgaod rounded out the scoring with two points in the 3000 meters.

A shorthanded men's track and field squad didn't score any points in the meet, but still put together strong performances. Jerrel Calhoun was less than 0.2 seconds away from qualifying for the finals in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.91 seconds. Alexander Wofford ran the 400 meters in 55.91 seconds to finish 13th overall and fourth in a crowded heat featuring a pair of top-five runners.

Jason Perez-Martin won his heat of the 800 meters in 2:11.53 to finish 18th overall in the race. Jonathan Sears and Kieran Cassidy both finished in the top 10 of the shot put with Sears missing out on points by less than two feet.

UP NEXT: The track and field program head down to Romeoville on Friday for a meet at Lewis University.
