BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Roosevelt women's tennis team defeated former conference foe Olivet Nazarene to capture the only team victory for the tennis programs last week.
The two teams hosted Northwood last Thursday and both teams struggled for any momentum, dropping both contests 6-1. The women captured No. 6 singles by default for their only point in the match. Meanwhile, the men's point was won by
Juan Pablo Espinosa, who gutted out a 7-6, 6-7, 10-2 win at the No. 5 singles spot. The Lakers also won at No. 1 doubles as
Victor Dorojan and Filip Stojanovski combined to eke out a 7-6 win.
Last Friday, the two programs went to Olivet Nazarene and the women cruised with a 7-0 win over the Tigers while the men fell in a tight 5-2 decision.
Ximena Mercado and
Varvara Ogorodnikova both won their singles matches without dropping a game while
Teodora Petrica and
Fabiola Rivas both handily won in straight sets.
Sara Gajbhiye and
Malena Moya both had to go the full three sets, but both comfortably won the super tiebreaker.
Dorojan and Stojanovski again teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, this time cruising to a 6-1 win, but the Lakers still dropped the doubles point. Espinosa won at No. 5 singles much easier against the Tigers and
Lakshay Vivek also took home a straight-sets victory. Roosevelt took three other singles matches to three sets, but could not secure any of those wins.
