KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Roosevelt overcame a 12-point third-quarter deficit to run away with an 82-70 overtime win over Western Michigan on Tuesday in an exhibition game in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Lakers trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but trimmed the deficit to five early in the third quarter. Western Michigan extended the lead back to 12 at 42-30 with 4:16 left in the period, yet Roosevelt had an answer with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes.
Isabel Lindo had eight of those 13 points with a pair of 3-pointers and a layup and
Isabella Pitta added a pair of layups, including the basket with 14 seconds left in the third to take the lead.
Neither team led by more than a bucket in the fourth quarter until Lindo hit a turnaround jump shot with less than four minutes left to put the Lakers up by four. The Broncos rallied to tie the game at 61, but
Kelly Boyle answered with a layup with just over a minute left. Boyle would then have the last shot in regulation to win the game, but her contested shot bounced off the iron.
Western Michigan started the overtime with a 3-pointer, but the Broncos had no answer for the Lakers over the final four minutes of the extra session. Roosevelt went on a 15-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into a rout by forcing five turnovers and converting on the other end for eight points. The Lakers finished 6 of 7 from the floor in overtime after shooting 53.6 percent in the second half to pull off the comeback.
Pitta led the Lakers offense with 22 points and
Marie Outlay also matched her teammate with 22 points. Both also recorded a double-double for the second straight game with Pitta grabbing 13 rebounds and Outlay adding 10 boards. Boyle and Outlay co-led in assists with six each to help run the Lakers offense while Lindo scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and
Brynne Katcher scored four of her eight points in overtime for the Lakers.
UP NEXT: The Lakers' game against Trinity Christian was canceled after the Trolls canceled their season. Now, Roosevelt will resume next week in conference play against Michigan Tech on Dec. 4 at 5:30 in the Blackout at the Goodman Center game.
