BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Roosevelt women had six top-three finishes to kick off the indoor track & field season Saturday at the ONU Holiday Open hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.
The Lakers performed well over most distances, showing off their strengths in both the short, medium and long-distance runs. In the 200-meter dash,
Khaniya Higginbotham won her heat in 26.93 seconds and ended up finishing second overall. Senior
Angela Louis won her heat in 26.97 seconds and placed third in the overall standings.
Destiny Ashcraft powered home to finish third in the 800 meters in 2:34.95 then in the 3,000 meters,
Gloria Romero took home the silver medal in 11:18.09. Romero also finished fifth in the mile while Louis took home fifth in the long jump.
Roosevelt also ran well in the 4x400-meter relay with a second-place finish in 4:29.34 with the team of Ashcraft, Higginbotham,
Hannah Ranstead and
Kitana Watson.
Millicent Ghapson rounded out the top-three finishes by finishing third in the high jump after clearing 1.40 meters.
On the men's side, Tyrin Stewart started off his college career with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash after qualifying with the third-fastest time in the preliminaries.
Brandon Saavedra placed fourth in the 3,000 meters, the same position the 4x400-meter team of
Rocco Cipolla,
Javaris Jones, Jakobie Turner and
Alexander Wofford finished. Turner also finished second in the triple jump for the Lakers.
