Herrera Named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention

BAY CITY, Mich. – Junior goalkeeper Roxy Herrera became the first Roosevelt women's soccer player to earn honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Thursday when she was named to the all-conference honorable mention team by the league.

It was a well-deserved honor for the Chicago native, who was never bored during her 17 starts in goal for the Lakers this season. Herrera finished the regular season fourth in the country with 130 saves and ninth nationwide with 7.65 saves per game. She had 10 or more saves five times, accounting for more than half of the double-digit save performances in the GLIAC this season.

Herrera faced the most shots in the GLIAC by a wide margin as well with 363 shot attempts lobbed her way, nearly half of which actually ended up on target. The junior was also at her best against the biggest opponents, turning aside 12 shots on the road against nationally-ranked Grand Valley State then made 11 saves the next week against eventual GLIAC champions Northern Michigan.

"Roxy played outstanding in goal for us in our first season in NCAA Division II and the GLIAC," Roosevelt head coach Tom Czop said. "She kept us in many games this season, leading the GLIAC in saves and shots faced, while making crucial acrobatic saves game in and game out.  She is a fearless competitor, who practices how she plays games, is a tremendous leader, and is very deserving of this recognition."
