Lakers' Season Ends With Loss To Pride

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt closed out its inaugural NCAA Division II season Thursday afternoon with a heartbreaking 2-1 setback against Purdue Northwest at Morris Field.

It was a tense first 45 minutes of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer in Arlington Heights as both teams had great chances to take the lead. It wasn't until the 64th minute that the Lakers (0-13-4, 0-12-2 GLIAC) found the opening salvo off a chaotic play in front of the Purdue Northwest goal.

Daisy Hernandez-Loya sent in a corner kick toward the Pride's net and the ball was scrambled around in the six-yard box. After a few attempts to steer the ball into the net from the wave of Lakers, Aaliyah Leanos found the ball at her feet and she slammed the ball into the goal. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman, but it was a short-lived lead for Roosevelt.

A little more than 90 seconds after Roosevelt took the lead, Purdue Northwest found the equalizer courtesy of a throw-in that skipped into the box. The Pride took the lead less than three minutes later when a loose ball found its way onto the foot of an attacker for the goal. The Lakers pushed for an equalizer in the final 25 minutes of the match, but a drive from 30 yards out from Hernandez-Loya hit the crossbar flush for the closest chance of the second half.

Hernandez-Loya made an impact all over the field for the Lakers with four shots and some dangerous crosses. In the first half, Hernandez-Loya nearly connected with Leanos at the back post, but the freshman sent the header just wide of the target. She also took a majority of Roosevelt's corner kicks and created chaos in the penalty area with her well-placed attempts.

Roxy Herrera finished with six saves in goal, giving her 130 on the season, the most by a Lakers goalie in six years and fourth most all-time. Her .739 save percentage this year was the fifth-best among goalies with at least 1,000 minutes played and only two goalies played more minutes this year than the 1,517 Herrera played in net.
