Lakers Come Up Short On Trip To Calumet St. Joseph

Box Score

WHITING, Ind. – Roosevelt could not muster enough two-out magic Saturday in a 9-1 setback in the finale of its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference series with Calumet St. Joseph at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana.

The tone for the game was set in the first inning when the Crimson Wave retired the first two Lakers they faced before Roosevelt began to apply some pressure. The Lakers (22-15, 11-10 CCAC) managed three straight hits with two outs in the inning, but Sean Blanchard was thrown out trying to score on Sherman Martin's single to right field to end the frame.

Jojo Mack led off the third inning with a single then promptly stole second before Bryce Hayman drew a walk. Diego Munoz advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, but Blanchard's sacrifice fly to center field that plated Mack as Roosevelt's only run of the game. Roosevelt had another chance in the fourth when Ben Compton hit a two-out double to put runners on second and third, but both were stranded on the base paths.

Roosevelt's lead did not last, however, as Calumet St. Joseph promptly scored three runs in the bottom of the third off Kerry Zeese. The Lakers nearly escaped the inning with a tie game, but an error in the field allowed two runs to score on the play, and giving the Crimson Wave a 3-1 lead. A quiet fourth and fifth from Zeese unraveled in the sixth when the first four batters the senior faced recorded a hit, two of which came around to score while Zeese was in the game. Kyle Winston came in to replace Zeese with runners on first and second, and allowed just one more run to come across, increasing Roosevelt's deficit to 6-1.

If the Lakers were going to make a comeback, the seventh inning was their best chance as they loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn't find the critical hit to clear the bases. Roosevelt did the same thing in the eighth inning, but Calumet St. Joseph had tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to increase its lead. The Crimson Wave then added one more insurance marker in the eighth before Roosevelt went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

Roosevelt did manage 12 hits in the contest, but also stranded 12 runners on base in the loss. Blanchard and Toenjes were two of four players with a pair of hits on the day along with Hunter Darst and Luca Paolucci, who was 2 for 2 in relief of Mack in left field. Hayman was 0 for 2 at the plate, but did draw three walks in his five plate appearances.

The Lakers will return to action Tuesday at noon when it finishes its previously-suspended game against Judson at Ozinga Field. Roosevelt was leading 8-6 in the fourth inning when the game was halted, and the contest will resume from that point. Following the conclusion of that game, the Lakers and Eagles will play their regularly-scheduled contest to close out that series.
