Blanchard Lifts Roosevelt To Sweep Of Calumet St. Joseph

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Sean Blanchard's game two heroics helped Roosevelt sweep a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Calumet St. Joseph on Friday at Ozinga Field.

After cruising to a 12-0, run-rule victory in game one of the afternoon doubleheader, the Lakers (22-15, 11-10 CCAC) found themselves down 5-4 to the Crimson Wave in the seventh inning of the second contest. Down to their final at-bats as the designated visiting team, the Lakers were rescued by a towering three-run homer from Blanchard to left field to put Roosevelt in front. Connor Collins earned his first save of the season by striking out the side after a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the frame to secure the 7-5 victory.

Bryan Green started for Roosevelt and earned his sixth win of the season with a controlled six innings on the mound. The senior righty struck out six and mostly kept the Crimson Wave in check with the exception of the third inning. In that inning, Calumet St. Joseph scored five runs on four hits, yet only three of those runs were earned due to a pair of Roosevelt's errors. Otherwise, Green didn't allow another run and gave up just one additional hit before giving way to Collins.

The Crimson Wave's five runs were a response to the Lakers scoring four in the top of the third, aided by several Calumet St. Joseph mistakes as well. Ben Compton reached on an error to lead off the frame then a second error allowed Jojo Mack to reach on his sacrifice bunt attempt. Diego Munoz broke the deadlock with a sacrifice fly to center field before Blanchard delivered the first hit of the inning with an RBI single. Hunter Darst reached on another fielding error setting up consecutive RBI singles from Sherman Martin and Jack Toenjes.

Roosevelt didn't have many other chances in the second game, though it did put a runner on second base with two outs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. However, the offense was able to manufacture runs when it needed it in the seventh. Mack led off with a walk then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bryce Hayman. Munoz was hit by a pitch to set the scene for Blanchard, who finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs in the second game.

There was no shortage of offense from the Lakers' bats in the first game of the day when they pounded out 12 runs on 11 hits with all nine starters recording at least one hit. Noah Mathias struck out four and allowed just two hits in six innings of work, rarely facing much trouble against the Crimson Wave. The exception was the third inning when a two-out infield single was followed by an error and walk before Mathias induced a fly ball to Hayman in center field.

By the time Mathias took the mound for that third inning, though, he had a six-run lead courtesy of a breakout second inning for Roosevelt. Jaylen Heard doubled into center field then Compton walked and Mack hit an infield single to load the bases. Heard scored on an error by the Calumet St. Joseph catcher then Munoz and Blanchard both took bases-loaded walks. Darst drove in a fourth run on an infield single then everyone moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Martin ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Hayman added two more runs to the scoreline with a home run to right field that also scored Heard, who led off the fifth inning with a walk. The hit parade continued in the sixth with each of the first four batters Roosevelt sent to the plate recording a hit. Blanchard began the frame with a triple then scored on Darst's single to left field. Martin singled to keep the momentum going then Toenjes singled with a throwing error ultimately allowing Darst to score on the play. Danny Holloway provided his second RBI of the season with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly before the Lakers tacked on a fourth run in the inning courtesy of a wild pitch.

Roosevelt will conclude its series with Calumet St. Joseph on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana.
