Box Score 2 CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt University baseball team dropped two tightly-contested CCAC games to Olivet Nazarene University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5. Game one went extra innings, finishing at 6-4 and the second game 8-6 in seven innings at Ozinga Field. With the two losses, the Lakers are now 6-5 in conference play and 12-14 overall this season.
In game one, Trevor Heinlein got the scoring started for the Lakers in the third inning with a double down the right field line, scoring Daniel Gutierrez and Jojo Mack who had reached base on a single and walk respectively.
The Lakers added to their lead in the fifth inning. After Andrew Olszewski was hit by a pitch, Gutierrez was able to advance him with a single. A Jojo Mack sacrifice fly allowed Olszewski to score, increasing the RU lead to 3-0.
Olivet rallied back in the sixth, scoring four runs on six hits. However, the Lakers were able to close the gap in the bottom half of the inning. After a Nick McAlister bunt single and stolen base, Danny Holloway was able to drive him home with single to tie the game at 4-4.
After neither team was able to score in the seventh, the teams headed to extras. In the eighth, the Tigers plated two runs to take a 6-4 lead and the game one win.
Game two was equally competitive and got off to a fast start, with the Tigers roaring out to a six-run lead. The Lakers battled back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Trevor Heinlein continued to swing a hot bat, plating Daniel Gutierrez and Hunter Darst with a single. Two batters later, Nick McAlister scored Jojo Mack with a single to left field, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
Roosevelt continued to battle back in the second. After Jojo Mack forced a two out walk, Heinlein advanced him to second with yet another base hit. A Jaylen Heard double to left center scored both men, cutting the margin to 6-5.
Both teams pitching staffs settled down, going scoreless for the next three innings, until Mack tripled down the left field line. Heinlein added yet another RBI to his total, to tie the game at 6-6.
Much like game one, the Tiger bats came alive at the opportune moment, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead at 8-6. Despite a two-out rally to load the bases, the Lakers were unable to plate a run in the seventh, completing the doubleheader sweep for the Tigers.
